Vibe development vs vibe coding: building real systems with AI
Vibe coding on Lovable or Bolt gets you a working demo. Vibe development uses AI agents to architect infrastructure, SQL and backends that survive production.

In early 2025 “vibe coding” became the name for a new way of making software: describe what you want, let an AI write it, and accept the result without reading too closely. A wave of app-builder platforms, among them Lovable, Bolt, v0 and Replit, turned that into a product. You type an idea and a few minutes later you have a working app in a browser tab.
That is a real shift, and for a lot of jobs it is the right tool. But it has also blurred a distinction that matters a great deal once software has users: the difference between generating an app and building a system. I call the second one vibe development.
What vibe coding is good at
App builders compress the boring first week of a project into minutes. They pick a front-end framework, scaffold the pages, wire up a managed database and authentication, and host the result. For a prototype, a landing page, an internal tool or a quick test of whether an idea has legs, that is hard to beat.
The trade-off is that the platform makes the decisions. The stack, the hosting, the shape of the database and most of the defaults come from the builder, inside its sandbox. That is the point: you are not meant to think about them.
Where it runs out
The parts of software that are hard to get right are rarely the screens. They are underneath:
- Data. Which tables exist, how they relate, what is indexed, what constraints keep the data honest, how the schema changes safely over time, and who is allowed to read which rows.
- Backend behaviour. Background jobs, queues, retries, webhooks, rate limits, caching and integrations with other systems that do not always answer.
- Infrastructure. Where it runs, how it deploys, how secrets are stored, how it scales and what it costs at a hundred times today’s traffic.
- Operations. Logs, metrics, backups, rollbacks and knowing that something broke before a customer tells you.
A generated app can look finished while all of that is implied rather than designed. It works in the preview. Then real users arrive, the data grows, a migration goes wrong or an access rule turns out to be missing, and the prototype has to be rebuilt by someone who understands the system.
What vibe development means
Vibe development keeps the speed of AI and moves the human up a level. Instead of asking a platform for an app, the developer designs the system and directs AI agents to build it:
- Architecture first. Services, data flows, environments and failure modes are decided and written down before any code is generated.
- Data on purpose. The SQL schema, indexes, migrations and row-level security are designed and reviewed, because that is where most AI-built software quietly breaks.
- Infrastructure you own. Cloud accounts, containers or edge workers, CI/CD and secrets, rather than a builder’s hosting.
- Agents as a team. Several coding agents work in parallel on scoped tasks, the way a lead engineer splits work across a team, and every change is reviewed.
- Proof, not vibes. Tests, type checks, evaluations, logs and staged deploys decide whether something is done.
The AI still writes most of the code, often far more than any one person could. What changes is who owns the decisions. In vibe coding, the platform does. In vibe development, the developer does, and the agents are how that developer works at the speed of a whole team.
Choosing between them
The two are not rivals. A sensible path is often to vibe-code a prototype to find out whether an idea is worth building, then vibe-develop the real thing once it is. The mistake is treating the prototype as the product. If people will rely on it, store their data in it or pay for it, the system underneath deserves to be designed by someone who can read it.
Questions and answers
What is vibe development?
Vibe development is building production software with AI coding agents while a developer owns the architecture: the data model, infrastructure, backend services, security and testing. The AI writes most of the code; the developer designs, directs and verifies it.
How is vibe development different from vibe coding on Lovable or Bolt?
Vibe coding on app builders generates an app inside the platform's sandbox with its default stack and a managed database. Vibe development starts from an architecture you design and runs on infrastructure you own, with SQL, backends and deployment built on purpose.
Is vibe coding bad?
No. Hosted AI builders are excellent for prototypes, landing pages and internal tools. The trouble starts when a prototype becomes a product without anyone designing the data, security and operations underneath it.
